Can I take my dog on a private jet?

No obligation. A Charter-A specialist replies with aircraft options and one fully inclusive price. Prefer to talk? Call +44 (0)20 7781 8094, 24 hours a day.

The short answer

Yes. On a private jet your dog travels in the cabin beside you, not in the hold. It needs the same documents as on any journey across a border: a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and the right health certificate or pet passport for the destination. Charter-A confirms the rules for your route, checks the paperwork and routes the flight through an airport approved for pets.

Key facts

  • Dogs travel in the cabin with you, never in the hold.
  • The microchip comes first, then a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel.
  • UK to the EU: an Animal Health Certificate issued within 10 days of departure, which also covers the return for four months.
  • Returning to Great Britain: a vet’s tapeworm treatment one to five days before landing, and arrival at an approved airport.
  • Carriage is confirmed with the aircraft operator when you book, and some airports charge a pet fee.

Where does my dog sit?

In the cabin with you, with water and its own bedding to hand. A dog must be restrained for take-off and landing, as passengers are. No pet travels in the hold on a flight arranged by Charter-A.

What paperwork does a dog need to fly from the UK to Europe?

  1. A microchip. A standard ISO-compatible chip, fitted before the rabies vaccination.
  2. A rabies vaccination. Given after the microchip and at least 21 days before travel. If your dog’s boosters are up to date, this is usually already covered.
  3. An Animal Health Certificate. Issued by an official vet within 10 days of departure. It then covers onward travel within the EU and the journey home for four months.
  4. Arrival at the right airport. Pets enter the EU through designated points of entry where the documents are checked. We route the flight accordingly.

What is needed to bring a dog back to Great Britain?

  • One of three documents: an EU pet passport issued in the EU, the Animal Health Certificate used for the outward journey (valid for the return for four months), or a Great Britain pet health certificate.
  • A tapeworm treatment given by a vet between one and five days (24 to 120 hours) before landing, and recorded by the vet in the dog’s documents.
  • Arrival at an airport approved for pets. Charter-A routes the flight to one and arranges the check before you land.

What about the United States?

A dog entering the United States must be at least six months old and microchipped, and a CDC Dog Import Form has to be completed online before departure; the receipt travels with you. Charter-A tells you which health and vaccination records to carry for your routing, and plans the requirements for the return to the UK before you leave.

How much notice does a flight with a dog need?

The flight can be arranged as quickly as any other; the paperwork sets the pace. A dog that has never been vaccinated against rabies has to wait 21 days after the vaccination. If the vaccinations are up to date, what remains is the vet’s certificate, issued within ten days of departure, and — for the return to Great Britain — the tapeworm treatment one to five days before landing.

Does it cost more to fly with a dog?

The charter price is for the aircraft, so a dog does not need a ticket. Some airports charge a fee for handling pets, which is added if it applies, and carriage is agreed with the aircraft operator when you book.

Can cats and other pets fly too?

Yes. Cats travel in the cabin in the same way, and the travel rules for cats are broadly the same as for dogs, without the tapeworm treatment. Tell us what is travelling when you enquire.

Entry requirements are set by the authorities and can change at short notice; the outline above is not the final word. Charter-A confirms the rules in force for your trip as part of every booking. The official guidance is on GOV.UK: taking your pet abroad and bringing your pet to Great Britain.

More questions

Do dogs travel in the hold on a private jet?

No. On a private jet arranged by Charter-A, dogs and other pets travel in the cabin with their owners.

Can a large dog fly on a private jet?

Yes. Tell us the breed and size when you enquire, so that the aircraft, and its operator’s approval, can be matched to your dog.

Does my dog need a passport to fly on a private jet?

It needs the same documents as on any other journey across a border. From Great Britain to the EU that is an Animal Health Certificate; to return, an EU pet passport issued in the EU, the Animal Health Certificate or a Great Britain pet health certificate.

How long before travel must a dog be vaccinated against rabies?

At least 21 days before travel, and after the microchip has been fitted. A puppy cannot be vaccinated against rabies until it is 12 weeks old.

Which UK airports can pets arrive at by private jet?

Pets arriving in Great Britain must land at an airport approved for pet arrivals. Charter-A routes the flight to an approved airport and arranges the check before you land.
