The short answer
Yes. Passenger numbers run from four in a very light jet to as many as 19 in the largest type in the Charter-A fleet guides, so a family or small team fits on one aircraft. A larger party can split across two aircraft or move to a larger one. The limits are seats, luggage and weight, and the aircraft is matched to all three.
Key facts
- Very light jets seat 4 to 5; light and midsize jets up to 9; heavy jets 11 to 14; the largest up to 19.
- The price is for the whole aircraft, so a full cabin brings the cost per person down.
- Weight, not only seats, sets what an aircraft can carry on a given flight.
- Tell us about bulky equipment, children and pets when you enquire.
- Larger parties can fly in two aircraft on the same schedule.
- Each passenger needs their own passport for an international flight.
How many people can fit on a private jet?
More than many people expect, and fewer than a small airliner. The figures below are the highest seen in the Charter-A fleet guides for each class. They are the number of seats the aircraft carries, and, as explained further down, the number you can actually fly can be lower on a long trip with heavy luggage.
| Class | Passengers | Typical flight | Examples from the fleet guides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Very light jets | 4 to 5 | Up to about 2 hours | Citation Mustang, Phenom 100, Citation M2, HondaJet |
| Light jets | 5 to 9 | Up to about 3 hours | Citation CJ3, Phenom 300E, Pilatus PC-24 |
| Midsize jets | 6 to 9 | Up to about 4 to 5 hours | Citation XLS+, Hawker 900XP |
| Super-midsize jets | Up to 9 | Up to about 6 to 7 hours | Citation Latitude, Praetor 600 |
| Heavy jets | 11 to 14 | Up to about 8 to 9 hours | Legacy 650, Falcon 900, Gulfstream G350 |
| Ultra-long-range jets | 9 to 19 | 11 hours and more | Global 6000, Falcon 7X, Lineage 1000 |
| Turboprops | 6 to 8 | Up to about 2 to 3 hours | Pilatus PC-12, King Air 200 |
From the Charter-A fleet guides. Passenger numbers are the highest seen for each type; individual aircraft are laid out differently, so the quote states the seat count for the aircraft offered.
The largest aircraft in the fleet guides, the Embraer Lineage 1000, is described as a VIP airliner and seats up to 19. For parties above that size, see group air charter on Charter-A.com.
How do seats and weights work?
An aircraft has a maximum take-off weight, and that weight has to cover the passengers, their bags and the fuel. On a short flight there is room for all of it. On a long flight, more fuel is needed, and a full cabin with a lot of luggage can reach the limit before the seats run out. That is why the same aircraft can carry more on one trip than on another, and why the figures in the table are a maximum rather than a promise.
The practical consequence is simple: tell us the number of passengers and the luggage, and let us choose an aircraft with some margin. A party of eight on a three-hour flight in an aircraft with nine seats is a snug one, so on a longer flight we may suggest a class with a seat or two to spare. This is the same rule that which size of private jet do I need? applies to everyone: choose the smallest aircraft that carries the party and its luggage the distance without stopping.
When should a group split across two aircraft?
When the party is larger than the largest suitable aircraft, or when two smaller aircraft fit the trip better than one large one. There are a few common reasons:
- The party is bigger than one cabin. Above the seat count of the largest aircraft available, two aircraft are the option.
- The luggage or equipment is the limit. A party that fits the seats but not the baggage holds can sometimes be carried in two aircraft more easily than in one.
- The runway or airport. Some airports suit only smaller aircraft, which is a reason to use two small ones rather than one large one.
- Different timings. Two aircraft let part of a group leave earlier or later than the rest.
- Different routes. A group that splits at the destination can take two aircraft to two airports.
Two aircraft cost more than one, and two flights bring two sets of airport fees, so the choice is worth pricing both ways. Ask for a quote for one larger aircraft and for two smaller ones, and compare the totals. Two aircraft can be arranged on the same schedule, so the party leaves and arrives together.
What about luggage and equipment?
Luggage is often what decides the aircraft for a group. As a general guide, one suitcase and one soft bag for each passenger, though the real limit is the size of the hold, the door and the weight. The luggage guide gives baggage space by class, and the fleet pages give it for each type. Soft bags pack better than hard cases. There are no charges per bag, because the price is for the aircraft.
A sports team or an organised party brings equipment as well: kit bags, medical cases, instruments, skis or golf clubs. Most private jets carry golf clubs, skis and similar items, but length and weight are the constraints, so give the dimensions and weights when you enquire, and we confirm the items fit or suggest another aircraft. The rules on dangerous goods apply as on an airline, so ask about anything unusual before you travel.

Can a family charter a private jet?
Yes, and families are among the people who use charter. A family of four or five fits a very light jet; a larger family, or one with grandparents, fits a light or midsize jet. The practical advantages are the ones that matter with children: a short arrival time at the airport, a private cabin, and a departure time that suits the family rather than a timetable. Pushchairs and child seats are routine, so mention them when you enquire.
Every passenger needs their own valid passport on an international flight, whatever their age, exactly as on an airline. Charter-A needs the names as they appear on the passports before the flight. See what happens on the day of a private jet flight.
Can children and pets travel too?
Yes. Children are passengers like any other, with their own passports on an international flight, and the crew is used to families. Pets travel in the cabin with you, not in the hold. A dog needs the same documents as on any journey across a border, and the paperwork, rather than the flight, usually sets the pace. The rules for dogs, including the rabies timetable and the return to Great Britain, are set out in taking a dog on a private jet, and the Charter-A pet flights page covers pets in general.
What about a sports team?
A team is a good example of the points above, because it combines a large party, a lot of equipment and a fixed date. Count the squad and the staff, list the equipment with its size and weight, and send the schedule with the times that matter. A team can use one aircraft if the numbers fit, or two aircraft on the same schedule. Because the date is usually fixed, book early: the earlier you book, the wider the choice of aircraft, and peak dates sell out. See how much notice you need.
A worked example: how many aircraft for how many people?
Using the passenger figures above, a few illustrations show how the choice falls. They are examples of reasoning, not quotes.
| Party | Possible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Family of four, light bags | A very light jet | Four or five seats; soft bags suit the smaller hold |
| Family of seven with skis | A midsize or super-midsize jet | More seats and a larger hold; give the ski lengths when you enquire |
| A party of twelve | A heavy jet, or two light jets | Heavy jets seat 11 to 14; compare the totals |
| A party of eighteen | The largest aircraft in the fleet guides, or two aircraft | The largest type seats up to 19, leaving little margin; two aircraft may suit better |
| A party of twenty-five | Two or more aircraft, or an airliner-size aircraft | Above the 19 seats of the largest type in the fleet guides |
Illustrations only. The seat count of the aircraft actually offered is stated in the quote, and luggage, weight and range on the day decide what fits.
In the middle of that table, such as twelve people, the right answer is often to price both ways. A single heavy jet keeps the party together in one cabin and one set of airport fees; two light jets may suit smaller airports and offer more headroom on luggage. Only a quote shows which is better value on your dates.
How early should a group book?
As early as the plan allows. A large aircraft is a scarcer thing than a small one, and two aircraft on the same schedule need two crews and two slots at the same airports. Peak dates, including summer weekends to the Mediterranean and the ski season, sell out and raise prices, and a late request narrows the choice of aircraft. If the date is fixed, such as a match, a wedding or a conference, book weeks or months ahead.
What about passengers who need extra help?
Tell us when you enquire. A passenger who uses a wheelchair, who needs medical equipment or who has limited mobility affects the choice of aircraft, because the door, the cabin and the steps differ from type to type. A pushchair or child seat is routine. Giving the detail early lets us match the aircraft and arrange the handling at both ends, so that the day itself is simple.
How much does a group charter cost?
The price is for the whole aircraft, not per seat, so the cost per person falls as the cabin fills. For illustration, a flight quoted at €6,000 works out at €1,000 each for six passengers. A larger aircraft costs more per hour, and two aircraft cost more than one, so the quote is the way to compare. A Charter-A quote is one inclusive figure for the aircraft, crew, fuel, and standard landing and handling fees, and the cost guide explains what sets it.
What about a wedding party, a celebration or a group trip?
The same logic applies. A party that travels together, arrives together and does not split across several airline bookings is one of the strengths of charter, and a group trip is often easier to manage when the whole party is on one flight. Count everyone, including children, and ask about the luggage early, because a celebration often brings more bags than a business trip. If the party is larger than one aircraft, two aircraft on the same schedule keep the group together on the day. Catering for a celebration, such as a cake or a particular drink, is ordered in advance and charged at cost.
What do the passengers need on the day?
Each passenger needs a passport for an international flight, with any visa an airline passenger would need. You go to the private terminal named in the flight schedule, which arrives at least 48 hours before departure, and you arrive about 30 minutes before take-off. Larger groups should allow a little longer, because the checks and the loading take more time for a big party. The full account of the day is in what happens on the day of a private jet flight.
What do I need to send when I enquire?
- The route and the dates, and whether the group travels together both ways.
- The exact number of passengers, and how many are children.
- The luggage and equipment, with sizes and weights for bulky items.
- Any pets, wheelchairs or medical equipment.
- Any flexibility in the date or the time, because it can lower the price.
More questions
How many passengers can a private jet carry?
From four in a very light jet to as many as 19 in the largest type in the Charter-A fleet guides. Light and midsize jets carry up to nine, super-midsize jets up to nine, and heavy jets 11 to 14.
Can a large group fly together on one private jet?
Up to the seat count of the aircraft, yes. A group larger than that can fly in two aircraft on the same schedule, or in a larger aircraft where one is available. Ask for a quote both ways and compare.
Does a heavy luggage load limit the number of passengers?
It can. An aircraft has a maximum take-off weight that covers passengers, bags and fuel, so a full cabin with a lot of luggage on a long flight may be limited before the seats run out. We choose an aircraft with some margin.
Can a sports team take its equipment on a private jet?
Usually, yes. Most private jets carry golf clubs, skis and similar equipment. Give us the dimensions and weights when you enquire, and we confirm the items fit or suggest another aircraft.
Do children need their own passport on a private jet?
Yes. On an international flight every passenger needs their own valid passport, whatever their age, exactly as on an airline.
Is the price per person on a group charter?
No. The price is for the whole aircraft, so the cost per person falls as the cabin fills. A Charter-A quote is one inclusive figure for the aircraft, crew, fuel, and standard landing and handling fees.
